Remifemin Ingredients
Remifemin has only 1 ingredient, black cohosh extract. For a long time, scientists believed that black cohosh displayed estrogenic (estrogen-like activity) but after repeated studies, it has been found to instead act like serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with good feelings.
Does Remifemin Work?
Low levels of estrogen and progesterone cause the symptoms of menopause. Remifemin does not treat the actual causes of menopause. Rather, it addresses one of the symptoms of menopause, depression, by supplying the body with a compound similar to serotonin, N-omega-methylserotonin. [Link]
There is also evidence that Black cohosh has progesterone precursors that can be converted by the body to progesterone. If actually happens has not been sufficiently studied.
Is Remifemin Safe?
Black Cohosh is categorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). However, liver damage has been reported in a few individuals using black cohosh but many women take the supplement without adverse side effects. In Australia, supplements containing black cohosh are required to have a warning label which states that it may cause liver damage in some individuals and should not be used without medical supervision. this site is a godsend. Thank you.
Cheryl~ I just found Oona on Ebay. It’s $25.99 for 96 tablets. Hope this helps!
Remifemin worked for great for my hot flases but only for 1 year.
I’ve been using Remifemin for 9 years. Ran out 1 time and let it go for 2 weeks. Started having the same hot flashes every 10 minutes as I had before starting the pill. Will never run out again if I can help it….IT WORKS. My Gyno-docter takes it too!
Hi Marice, you are so lucky that Remifemin has worked so well for you. I tryed it and the first 6 weeks I felt great…. No hot flashes, sleeping better, less anxiety and increased sex drive. Now I am getting hot flashes back, no sex drive, my anxiety is alttle better, but not as good as before. I am bumming out, I really want this to work for me. I am taking 40mg twice a day. Any other suggestions about the mediacation would be soooooo helpful, this time in life is not fun….. thanks…
I would be very careful about treating yourself for any medical conditions. consult your doctor first. even natural remedies can cause cancer or kill you. I found this out a little too late. be careful or you could die too.
Deborah,
So very sorry to hear about your misfortune. What over-the-counter menopause product/ingredient caused you the cancer problem? How are you doing now?
I have tried Remifemin twice. 1st time after 6 weeks my hot flashes stopped with repeated use (twice a day), then after about 3 months my period started again and continued for a month. I went down to 1 pill a day and bleeding continued then I stopped it all together and the bleeding eventually stopped and the hot flashes come back. I suffered through the hot flashes for 4 months and then went back to Remifemin and the same thing is happening. Why is that?
gosh! i feel for all of your guys, love all ideas and remarks. i just don’t know… but i am under stress and i never try remifemin so i
well give it a try. I hope it works for me.
Well I haven’t tried anything and have been told by my gynecologist that until my thyroid levels level out I cant be put on any mess for hot flashes. So as I melt I wish you all luck. I’m 51 and really tired of being hot.
I am 53 yrs old & first started having menopausal symptoms in my late 40’s. I was experiencing severe hot flashes & night sweats. Then the aggressive mood swings came in followed by vaginal dryness & painful sex.
I can’t live without Remifemin. The days that I ran out were bad ones. The hot flashes & sweats returned almost immediately. When I need extra support I use either Source Naturals Progesterone Cream, Fish Oil, or Barlean’s The Essential Woman Softgels. All work well unless I’ve been over doing sugars, dairy or caffeine. These are dietary contributors to menopausal symptoms.
Sadly I haven’t found any over the counter treatments that work for vaginal dryness. I ended up having to get a RX estrogen cream from my Dr. that is giving me mild to moderate success.
