After menopause, the body no longer produces follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which tell the ovaries to produce progesterone, estrogen, and estradiol. These hormones are still produced by other parts of the body but in insufficient quantities. The body is not used to the lack of hormones and familiar symptoms such as hot flashes, osteoporosis, and fatigue
Hormone Replacement Therapy
One way to relieve the symptoms of menopause is to give the body the hormones that are deficient. This is called hormone replacement therapy. The hormones used for this treatment are either the actual missing hormones (hormone replacement therapy) or similar hormones (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Theme).
The problem is that with traditional (pharmaceutical) hormone replacement therapy is that the drugs used are very potent and end up causing cancer with prolonged usage.
HRT risks and possible side effects include:
- Increased risk of endometrial cancer in women with a uterus if estrogen is taken without progesterone or a progestin
- Slightly increased risk of breast cancer after 4 or more years of HRT, as shown in the WHI study that used continuous combined oral estrogen and progestin (Prempro). Estrogen alone or other HRT regimens may not raise the risk of breast cancer significantly.
- Increased breast density, making mammograms more difficult to interpret and possibly increasing breast cancer risk. This appears to be an effect primarily associated with taking oral progestin continuously with estrogen (e.g., Prempro).
- Slightly increased risk of ovarian cancer
- Slightly increased risk of blood clots, associated primarily with oral estrogens such as Premarin*
- Increased risk of gallbladder disease, associated primarily with oral estrogens such as Premarin*
- Slightly increased risk of heart attack or stroke, both in women with cardiovascular disease and in healthy women. This effect may be associated primarily with HRT using continuous combined oral estrogen and progestin (Prempro) or the daily use of an oral progestin such as Provera with estrogen.
- Breast pain (often a temporary problem)
- Nausea, associated primarily with oral estrogens*
- Bloating and fluid retention, primarily associated with progestins, e.g., medroxyprogesterone acetate
- Negative effects on mood, primarily associated with progestins, e.g., medroxyprogesterone acetate
*Note: These side effects seem to be associated with oral estrogen and not with transdermal estrogen.
HRT is usually not recommended for women who have:
- Vaginal bleeding for no known reason
- A history of breast cancer
- A history of cancer of the uterus
- Liver disease
- Blood clots in the veins or legs, or in the lungs. This includes women who have had blood clots during pregnancy or when taking birth control pills.
- Cardiovascular disease (diseases of the heart and blood vessels)
There are alternatives to prescription hormone replacement therapy which include progesterone/estrogen/estriol creams and herbal supplements. These products aren’t as powerful as the products used in hormone replacement therapy but they do provide relief from menopause symptoms. The best products contain BOTH progesterone and estrogen because those are the hormones that are missing when menopause hits.
There are risks involved in supplementing your body with hormones and these risks increase dramatically with traditional hormone replacement therapy because of the strength of pharmaceutical products. Natural creams and supplements contain phytoestrogens which are plant-based estrogens that mimic but are not exact copies of the body’s own hormones
I am on HRT and happy about it. If I were not, I’d be dead, in jail or ready to harm someone.
I have tried everything. Tonight will be the first ight I try SOURCE NATURALS -Hot Flash, it is suppose to help reduce the frequency of hot flashes.
I don’t have them during the day, only night sweats, which tells me that horomoamally stuff is at a higher level in the morning and all sway, but when night fall the total imbalance rears it ugly head of contention.
I had a hysterectomy at 38, Still having hotflashes at 66! The Dr wouldn’t give me estrogren when i refused MORE mammograms. I took one Icool pill this morning and felt like i was in the ozone…I didn’t have one hotflash, but wasn’t worth the ozone feeling.
After having my ovaries surgically removed in 1993, I have tried a number of remedies both orally and cream. I’ve been taking i-Cool for a number of months now and have noticed a reduction in hot flashes. However, I have noticed that I do not sweat as much and get overheated easily. Does anyone know if this is a side effect of i-Cool?
What did you mean when you said ozone? Can you explain? I was going to buy i cool and shopped around for it. I think only some stores like cvs and walgreens carry it.
I am using estroven and it seems to be having good effect.
HRT is for the most part off the table because I am too
concerned about the possible side effects. My own thoughts I guess. It has helped me to feel beter though.
well I’ve not tried anything as a matter of fact i’m leary of a lot of meds. i dont like takin med cause of the side effects but i’ in dier need of something to help me get my libido bck, mojo, sex drive or whatever u want to call it. i’m 58 goin on 59 next month been goin thru menopause for over 20 yrs last 4 have wreak havoc on my marriage of 33 yrs please somebody tell me what do i do to save my marriage
i have been menopausal for 4 years; peri-menopausal for 20. I have been using a natual bio-identical cream and it helps a great deal. I found the most valuable information on https://www.power-surge.com/educate/34symptoms.htm
You might try testosterone cream to revitalize the libido. Works or some, not for others.
I have been using a supplement called Menoquil for the last couple of years. It got rid of the “I wanna hit somebody” feeling and the night sweats. Unfortunately, you can’t buy it in a pharmacy. You have to look for it online. I was reading through here for anything new or another place to buy it.
I just had my 40th birthday and have been experiencing hot flashes and cold sweats. Last night I was at Barnes&Noble and started bawling for no evident reason! I’m searching for a safe supplement to relieve myself of these symptoms. I was told to take black cohosh and estroven. Suggestions anyone?
I had a hystorectamy when I was 47 I am now 63 I am still having night sweats. My house has to stay cold for me at night mostly. I get over heated easyly. I have not found anything naturally that helps. I refuse the synthetic junk the dr. wanted to put me on. My poor husband has been a jewel through this. If anyone knows of a natural product that really works e-mail me with the information. I have no sex drive but I make sure that my husband is taken care of.
Hey Victoria,
……read the above comments again cause I found them to be very helpful and informative. Estroven seems to be a good remedy though I have not taken any form of therapy yet. I started having flashes about a month ago from head to hips, I’m 54. Their not bad but come about 5 times a day and about twice at night. It is so wierd to feel that heating sensation that last for about 12 seconds,,,,wonder will they get longer and stronger as I get older. I ‘m not interested in (hrt) either because the contents are too strong. You’d think they’d reduce the amount of ingredients in the hrt’s since they increase the risk of heart problems, cancer, stroke, etc. Since estroven is natural you might combine that with one of the creams mentioned in the comments above. But of course check with your doctor first.
You might want to visit a GNC store and chat with a really knowledgable associate to get a feel of what might help too. Have you looked at and a menapause mulitivitamin. I’m sure you know about black kohosh which is the main natural ingredient in Estroven to help with flashes. They also mentioned Icool. Try a variety of things but you have to be on it long enough to see if it really works. For mood, st johns wort works good for me.
Happy Trails any way!!! Julia

I am 42. Had a hysterectomy @ 40 couldn’t deal with another year of pain from endometreosis and periods from h—. Left in one ovary and now that has a cyst the size of a golfball on it. Starting having hot flashes weeks ago knew something was up. Went to Dr. and got the welcome to menopause blood test. (hormone tested and over 85 normally a woman is around 20) Trying Estroven doubled up at night no success. Soy milk @ night, too. Don’t like how I am feeling. I had endo since my early 20’s and now this… BLAH! Reading up on supplements and bioidenticals … Gotta figure this out!
In reply to Kaci, Nov 27… I have taken Black Cohosh and at first it did help me with the hot flashes but now it isn’t helping so much with the hot flashes but it does help with my other symptoms. I have not tried the estroven only because it is soy based and for me, I don’t want the
soy because 1) it is the number 1 gmo food and 2) soy can(but not
always) affect a person’s thyroid. Of course I don’t want to take traditional hrt either because not only side effects but they have mares urine in them also. Just have to keep looking til I find something and hopefully it will be before I wind up in jail.
Have night sweats hot flashes no sex drive should I go on I have tried icool, amber in,estroven, there should be something for hot flashes that works out there if anybody knows please say thanks
Thank you for all the brave & honest discussions. I am 46 in perimenopause and already have excruciating symptoms. Body feels like it’s on fire from inside out, worsening during cycle with nausea, extreme fatigue, and scared things are only going to get worse in menopause. Now have intense & very painful burning in feet especially @ night. Body will not tolerate any type of hormone treatment. Could not take birth control meds. Please keep sending any info that worked or didn’t. Gained 50 pounds in past 18 months. Mother died @55, 15 years ago so no family history available to me. Redhead and do not respond to medications OTC or Rx like 95% of people. Scared. & frustrated @ lack of Doctor education in period & menopause!
Forgot to mention the depression, angry moods, & emotional chaos. Not my natural easy going state of being.
Interesting that the link that brought me to this article was going to tell me if I-cool works. DID NOT see that at all. ALSO my mom is part of a class action suit for HRT causing breast cancer. As far as sex drive. I have not had HRT for years, but I found out – I can think myself into wanting it – when I FEEL loved.
